What are Frozen Suncatcher Ornaments?
Most people are familiar with suncatchers. Usually made of glass or other transparent materials, decorative suncatchers are hung in sunny windows and allow the light to cascade through. The same principle applies to DIY frozen suncatchers. Rather than using traditional materials, however, ice suncatcher crafts are frozen blocks of ice. Within the ice, crafters arrange various items such as seeds, pinecones, leaves, branches, and more. Frozen suncatcher ornaments are a creative way to naturally decorate yards, patios, and other outdoor spaces.
How to Make an Ice Suncatcher
Learning how to make an ice suncatcher is easy. First, grab a warm jacket, winter hat, and gloves. Next, the materials should be gathered, beginning with a freezer safe container. DIY frozen suncatchers can range in size, but large ice ornaments can be heavy. Ideally, the freezer safe container should not be larger than the size of a standard round cake pan. Ice catchers which are especially big can cause tree branches to bend or break when they are hung. Collect various items to go inside the ice suncatcher craft. Younger children will enjoy gathering materials. Be sure to monitor them during this process, making certain to avoid items that are sharp, thorny, or potentially toxic. Form the ornaments by arranging the natural materials in several layers at the bottom of the freezing container. Place a smaller paper cup or pan into the freezing vessel to create a hole from which the craft can be hung. Carefully fill the container with water to the desired level. Leave the container outside in a very cold place to freeze. Depending upon the temperature, this may take several hours to a couple days. After the DIY frozen suncatcher is solid, remove it from the mold. Tie a strong ribbon or string through the hole in the center of the suncatcher. Secure the frozen suncatcher ornaments in the desired location. Since ice suncatcher crafts will eventually melt and may fall to the ground, make certain to avoid hanging it in areas with frequent foot traffic.
